LED downlights are the most popular lighting upgrade in Sydney homes, and for good reason — they're cheaper to run, last for years and give a clean, modern look. But a good result is about more than just buying fittings. Here's what to think about before you install, from cost and quantity to spacing and colour.
What LED downlights cost to install
For a straight swap of old halogen downlights to LED, most Sydney jobs work out around $60–$110 per fitting supplied and installed, and the per-light price tends to drop the more you do at once. Cutting brand-new downlights into an existing ceiling costs a bit more because there's extra wiring and cutting involved.

How many do you need, and where
A common rule of thumb for general lighting is roughly one downlight per 1.2 to 1.5 square metres of floor, spaced evenly. But it genuinely depends on ceiling height, the brightness you want and the room's purpose — a kitchen wants more light than a bedroom.
Placement matters as much as quantity. Lights should be spaced to avoid both dark corners and harsh hot spots, kept a sensible distance from walls so they wash them gently rather than scalloping, and positioned with furniture and walkways in mind. Colour temperature: warm or cool?

Many people choose warm white through living spaces and a cooler white in task areas. Some fittings are switchable between colours, which is handy if you're not sure. Keeping colour consistent within a room avoids a patchy look.

Old halogen downlights run extremely hot — enough to be a fire risk near insulation — use far more power, and burn out regularly. LED fittings use roughly a tenth of the energy for the same brightness, run cool, and last many years.
There's also a safety angle: replacing aging halogens and their transformers removes a known hot-running fixture from your ceiling.
